How I learned to cut it.

Ok, 10 days to go before I fly out to be with my daughter's family for X-mas. I have arranged for the owner of the house, (cat) to be at a friends during the time. She will be pampered, petted, loved, and spoiled, or otherwise continuation of her life here.

I have most of things bought, will pick up last few things this weekend. Including picking up some presents from the other grandparents, about 30 miles away, to take to deliver.

But the one thing that could have prevented making the trip is a small 3.5 x 5 piece of plastic. My drivers license. I was born in OK. My driver's license was in TX. I went to get my new DL from MO. I live here now, and needed my new DL, as it was expiring.

You would think i had asked who killed Kennedy. I took my original birth certificate to get it. I have had this document literally almost all my life. They told me it was not legal. I simply asked why.. they stated it wasn't legal. It didn't have the stamp, well, when i was born they didn't stamp them. I was then told i had to get one.

I looked online concerning OK birth certificate. I had to have a current state ID in order to get my birth certificate. Nuts, I went online, Found a place that could get it, I had to have a c opy of my daughter's ID saying she was my daughter and please send me my birth certificate.

After fighting with them for 3 weeks, they stated they couldn't do it. That the OK law forbid anyone but my parents had to request it. My parents have passed. Well, i can drive to OK and get it. They stated OK law had changed and unless I can get my parent's ok, I can get it.

I screamed, yelled, and threw my couch pillows across the room.

Then i did what I should have done to begin with. I called OK burea of records. I could send a copy of my daughter's license, a $10.00 check, and a form filled out requesting my B.C. and if i included a priority envelope I could have it within 4 days. I called daughter again, I emailed her all the info.. She filled it out and priority malied it Wed. Sat, I received my BC in my mail box.

She simply stated she was my daughter, I didn't have a curent state license, and would they please send it to me. No problems.

Lesson learned. Cut the red tape, Call the main place, and find out the facts, don't mess w/ online stuff. In this case they cost me time, frustration, and in the end no outcome that was good.

So, this week I'm going to get my Driver's License, and put my BC in a safe place, It looks kind of strange, bright colors, fresh printing, compared to the old black and white copy I've used for years. The familar isn't there, it doesn't seem "correct" but even something that old, is new again.. yet not.

Thanks for stopping by, don't forget to say hi..

Yeah bureaucrats can drive ya nuts. I went through something similar when I moved back to FL and tried to transfer my CDL to here. They refused to accept the copy of my birth certificate that I had used all of my life and had even used when I joined the military. Had to jump through all the hoops to order a certified, stamp, state records office original. What a pain.

Enjoy your trip.

You are lucky.  I do have my birth certificate (my mother sent it to me about 5 years ago), BUT........

My name was changed back about 30 years ago.  I have come to find out, probably not legally.  There is no record of it ever being changed.  So it is (my BC) basically useless.  I am going to have fun when I go to retire!

Oh, but I do have a drivers license.
